Known as the birthplace of tequila, mariachi, and classic dishes such as birria and the torta ahogada, the state of Jalisco is rich in tradition and culture. I have only been here once for a short visit, but I was able to squeeze in the four places below that I highly recommend if you want the full Jalisco experience.
Guadalajara
Capital of Jalisco and Mexico’s 2nd biggest city. Compared to CDMX, it’s more walkable and has a small-town charm. I recommend walking through the historic center and downtown areas where you can see the main cathedral, theater and various historic buildings. You also have to stop by the mercados and check out the artisanal souvenirs.
Tlaquepaque
A small, but super cute town that is very traditional. If you’re looking into booking a city tour around Guadalajara, pick one that includes a stop here just to have a quick meal and walk around the boutique shops.
Tequila
The hometown of my favorite liquor with DISTILLERIES GALORE! The tour I booked with my mom (through our hotel) took us to Tres Mujeres and Jose Cuervo. The popular option is to take the Jose Cuervo Express train from Guadalajara to Tequila to visit the Jose Cuervo distillery.
Puerto Vallarta
The state’s flagship resort town. The two must-see beaches are Playa Mismaloya and Playa Punta Negra. You also can’t miss the malecón, or boardwalk, which is the place to go for a fun night out because of the restaurants, bars and shops it has to offer.
Food
- Los Chilaquiles– Great for breakfast in Guadalajara!
- El Patio– Not only is the food to die for, but this popular spot in Tlaquepaque also has an excellent live mariachi band that plays throughout the day.
- La Palapa– Perfect, on-the-beach location for breakfast and/or dinner in PV.
- Fredy’s Tucan– Visit for PV’s delicious and generously-portioned breakfasts.
