Day Trips from CDMX
- Teotihuacán, México: Just 30 miles northeast of CDMX, in the state of México, you’ll find the ancient city of Teotihuacán and its well-known Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon. It was a city revered by the Aztecs, but built centuries before their time. I first visited this archaeological site in 2015, and I loved it so much, that I had to go back the last two times I was in CDMX. Just this last Thanksgiving, my mom and I booked a morning tour through Tripadvisor after previously doing afternoon tours. It was so worth getting up at 5 in the morning to beat the crowds and the afternoon heat! You can climb the 248 steps to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun and take in the great view of the whole site. Once you get back down, you can walk down the Avenue of the Dead and climb up the smaller Pyramid of the Moon. This is a must-see!
- Taxco, Guerrero: Located about 2.5 hours southwest of CDMX in the neighboring state of Guerrero, is the small town of Taxco (pronounced tahs-coh). Known for its silver mining and production of silver jewelry, the narrow, cobblestone streets and Spanish architecture have preserved the town’s colonial Mexico vibe. Although Guerrero is currently on the State Department’s ‘Do Not Travel’ list, Taxco deserves a mention for its cultural richness and great shopping! The town itself is safe but unfortunately, it is the highways and the state’s larger cities like Acapulco that have become dangerous for tourists.
