Florence
Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Florence is a city that breathes history, art, and unparalleled beauty.
- Duomo/Santa Maria del Fiore– The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with its mesmerizing dome designed by Brunelleschi, dominates the skyline.
- Uffizi Gallery– See Botticelli’s, The Birth of Venus, and da Vinci’s, Annunciation. Buy your ticket(s) online and skip the line!
- Ponte Vecchio– Cross the Arno River via the iconic Ponte Vecchio, where centuries-old shops line the bridge, showcasing Florence’s artisanal traditions.
- Galleria dell’Accademia– No visit to Florence is complete without standing before Michelangelo’s David. Similar to the Uffizi, buy your tickets in advance to avoid the long lines.
- Piazza della Signoria– This historic square is an open-air museum, surrounded by sculptures and structures including the imposing Palazzo Vecchio.
- Santa Croce– The Basilica di Santa Croce is one of the most important Franciscan churches in Italy. It’s often referred to as the Temple of the Italian Glories due to its numerous tombs of prominent Italian figures such as Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo. Inside, you’ll see frescoes by Giotto and his pupils, depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis.
Milan
Another historic city but with a touch of modern style. From iconic landmarks to trendy neighborhoods, Milan invites you to explore its diverse offerings. Below are the highlights from my trip.
- Milan Cathedral– Start your journey at the heart of the city with the magnificent Duomo. Visit the cathedral and don’t miss the panoramic views from the rooftop.
- Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II– Adjacent to the Duomo, this 19th-century shopping gallery is a visual delight. Explore high-end boutiques, cafes, and restaurants under its iconic glass roof.
- The Last Supper– Book tickets in advance to marvel at Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece housed at the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. As an Italian renaissance art fan, seeing this mural was a highlight for me.
- Sforza Castle– Explore this medieval fortress turned museum, featuring art collections, historical artifacts, and beautiful gardens.
